Simon Bressanelli # 14

The Sunday Session welcomes Simon Bressanelli.   I’m on my way to Kennington, south of the river, cycling through the driving rain with my kit on my back and Google maps in my pocket. I’m reminded of the great thing about this project – I see areas of London that I otherwise wouldn’t see. I arrive at a sweet cafe where Simon is sitting enjoying his coffee: it’s his local. He moved here partly due to his dancing career, because the area links him up with the rest of London. Cycling is out, as a precaution – Simon wants …

Rob Pickles & Niall McCann # 13

The Sunday Session welcomes Robert Pickles and Niall McCann.   It’s 10am, and I have just spent the night with my girlfriend in my new two man tent on Rob’s back garden in Hereford, close to the Welsh border (Really it’s a one man tent. So small!). There was a party last night for him and his friends, one of whom is Niall McCann. Rob and Niall met several years back in a study group at Bristol University whilst reading for their undergraduate degree in Zoology. It was immediately apparent that they shared many goals and aspirations. We take …

Desireé Pérez # 12

-1.5 minute read- The Sunday Session welcomes Desireé Pérez! The journey from Dalston to Camden was a mess, with three changes of transport. I finally arrive for the session, frustrated. I call Desi. There is chaos in the crowd around Camden tube, she tells me that I should be able to see her now, although I swear that I can’t. I scan the crowd. Then I find myself hearing our conversation twice, looking to my left, I see her standing next to me.     We move through the pulsating crowds towards Chalk Farm, hearing a plethora of sounds, …

Christopher Battye # 11

The Sunday Session welcomes Christopher Battye! Today I’m going to visit Chris at his place in Fulham. I enter his flat and I’m greeted with a display of intense artwork, hung on his corridor walls. We sit in his back room and enjoy a tea together. Chris is eloquent as his tells me of his life in London. He studied painting in Liverpool and moved here in ’64, the same year as the Beatles. As  you can expect it was possibly the best time to have a Liverpool accent in the city. Before becoming a painter Chris taught at a secondary modern school, …

Alice Stallard # 10

The Sunday Session welcomes Alice Stallard! Alice is an artist illustrator based in London. She exhibits locally and internationally. Recently she has had several works included in the Source Gallery at Tate Britain.     We meet on a bright but chilly winter’s day in a pub by Battersea Bridge. Alice is wearing a fantastic jacket covered with a collection of her patches. We walk westbound along the Thames, I almost slip into the river as I try to get a footing on the slimy, moss covered steps. I ask her about the patches on her jacket, presuming …

Valeriya Grenova # 9

– 2 minute read – The Sunday Session welcomes Valeriya Grenova! Valeriya from Moscow, moved to East London in ’93 with her Mum, and then to Amhurst Road in 2000. I’m always meeting people in East London who have seen the area change, who knew the area before it was stamped as ‘Cool’. After the rise of Brick Lane as a party and cafe scene, next was Shoreditch and up the Kingsland Road to Dalston and beyond. Jenny has been consistently living in the area for 20 years. I guess she is now more of a Londoner than a Muscovite.   …

Neil Libbert # 8

The Sunday Session welcomes Neil Libbert!       “It’s raining, Robert”! Says Neil as he calls me from South Kensington Tube. The rain is really torrential. It’s forty-five minutes before our session, but I have to rely on the weather forecast… it says sunshine at midday. I’m at my studio collecting my camera and tell Neil that I think it will brighten up. Like a moment from Back to the Future, at 12 midday the rain stops, and from nowhere we have glorious blue sky. Neil calls me back with an excited “you were right”. Phew!     We …

Vladimir Ryazantsev # 7

Vladimir Ryazantsov, known simply as Vlad , is the subject of today’s Sunday Session. Born in Ukraine, Vlad moved with his family to South-West London at the age of 15. He went to boarding school, then moved to Edinburgh to further his studies. Now he lives just off Battersea Park, where we meet. I find Vlad on the edge of the park, looking fresh faced . He said he hadn’t been out last night which is always good for my photos. We stroll through the park. There is a golden wintery light, leaves are falling,  people are going about their …

Scarlett Sabet # 6

Scarlett Sabet is a London based actor and poet. She is a striking and expressive girl with a background in acting and performance. Of French and Iranian descent, she was brought up in London and won a scholarship to Hurtwood House from which she graduated in 2008. Now at 24, she is part of the London literary scene regularly performing at ‘Jaw Dance’ in East London.   As with my other Sunday Sessions I planned a location that would compliment my subject. I found that the loft space at The Hackney Round Chapel was a great dramatic backdrop. A space …
