Pero # 23

The Sunday Session Welcomes Pero! The great thing about about this project for me is that, through meeting new people, I discover new places, and in turn their relationship with those places. I contacted Pero on the Thursday before our Sunday session, keen to learn of the location he had chosen. This is what he said: “Usually on a Sunday I try to get outside, do a bit of running or cycling apart from spending time with the family. So I usually run a certain route in the countryside near our house. The route goes through fields that are covered …

Sai # 22

The Sunday Session Welcomes Sai! Today we are in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. It’s 37 degrees! We jump on motorbikes and ride north of the old city and into the forest. I’m with Sai and her boyfriend Stefan. I met them both a few days previously at their restaurant, named the Lost Lounge in the old city where they both work. Sai owns it and cooks the food, Stefan whizzes the juices and serves. Sai’s spiritual paintings decorate the interior. After thirty minutes of riding we reach an old meditation meeting place, which some years ago saw a gathering of …

Uwe Paris # 21

-2 minute read- The Sunday Session welcomes Uwe Paris. Today I am in Berlin, journeying from East to West with ease, although the biting cold of -7°C  is eating through the double layer of gloves I am wearing. I meet Uwe in an upmarket restaurant, as with most of Sunday Session subjects I haven’t met him before but spot someone by the window eating alone, I’m sure its him. He catches my eye and I’m struck by his piercing blue eyes and slicked back grey hair. “This place is very un-Berlin” I crack. The Berlin I know is a place a …

Joyce Bergsma # 20

The Sunday Session welcomes Joyce Bergsma!   I meet Joyce on the Sunday 20th December, almost the shortest day of the year although there is a strong light blazing through the huge window at the Van de Buurt cafe on Rijpgracht, Amsterdam. She appears to be Dutch with red hair and tall in stature, although after we greet I realise that she is Canadian with Dutch ancestry. After completing a course in nutritional therapy 5 years ago in London, she was presented with a few directions to pursue with her new found qualification; work for an institution, an …

Petra Benach # 19

The Sunday Session welcomes Petra Banach I’m cycling towards Westerpark, on the north-western tip of the Amsterdam, I meet Petra at a café in Westergasfabriek. She tells me that the park is Amsterdam’s largest leash free area, Petra has a dog so this area is perfect for her. Originally from California, she studied Math, then through a turn of events moved to Humanistic Psychology with an emphasis in art therapy. She has always practised her art, and after founding a successful accounting business  she decided to call herself, and be an artist. Moving to Amsterdam in 2012 and setting up Exposing …

Mattheus Hemelrijk # 18

-4 minute read-   The Sunday Session welcomes Mattheus Hemelrijk! Its 2pm on Sunday, I’m cycling north to the Jordaan area of Amsterdam, I walk into Monumentje cafe to see Mattheus waiting for me at a table near the window. Music is playing and people are laughing.   Mattheus, looks very comfortable in this place, he begins; “I woke up, took a shower, and I thought about the place we were going to meet, which is Monumentje, this cafe, because it’s in the area where I was born, where I left when I was very young and then returned later. And it was kind …

Flore Marloes de Vreeze # 17

The Sunday Session welcomes Flore Marloes de Vreeze !     I meet Flore at her place in West Amsterdam, its absolutely throwing it down outside, I feel a little hurricane inside my hood. I’m going for two sessions today so 10 a.m. is feeling quite early. It’s so rainy that I feel the rain going sideways.   I’m welcomed into Flore’s home and feel myself going back in time, her home is dotted with so much detail. Wallpaper, glasses, tables and a lovely old record player from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Nothing modern here! I’m presented with a tea, meaning hot …

Grace Carter # 16

It’s Sunday again… Time moves slowly in Amsterdam. But I realise I’ve been here for a month already. I’m cycling from Noord to meet Opera singer Grace Carter. Whenever I take pictures I find my senses heightened, sounds are more visceral. Amsterdam is full of clicking sounds; the three gears on my bike, the traffic lights click rapidly, bridges open and close, there is a rhythm to this city which is comforting, like everyone is synced. Grace has chosen to be photographed close to the Artis (Zoo) and the botanical gardens. Just a few minutes from the Amstel River but …

Dunwich Dynamo # 15

Hello again from The Sunday Session! This weeks session is slightly different, I’m not making portraits of a specific person, but an event, which is special for many cyclists….Its been a while since my last Session, I have moved to Amsterdam for a short time and will be hoping to send you more Sessions very soon Best Wishes, Robert     It’s midnight on the fourth of July and I’ve been riding into the night on the Dunwich Dynamo. It’s a full moon, but once leaving the city the light has been soaked away by the trees of Epping …
